在台灣遇見威廉透納

今年是畫展看得很勤的一年。從美國會來後的一個月內就連看了三個，最後一個是來自Tate Britain的「JMW Turner: Echoes of Sublime」特展。 Joseph Mallord William Turner是英國浪漫主義風景畫家，能夠在台北與之重逢令人感到欣喜。Tate Britain是收藏其畫作的主要場館，即使這回來台展出的並非其最富盛名的作品，依舊相當精彩。 早期作品「Moonlight, a Study at Millbank」還不見後期的狂放，但氣氛已經一流。 最特別的，是展出作品中有不少水彩創作。「Traeth Mawr, Looking East towards Y Cnicht and Moelwyn Mawr」是早期以威爾斯風景為題材的作品。 「The St Gotthard Road between Amsteg and Wassen, Looking up the Reuss Valley」是他阿爾卑斯山之旅的水彩創作，讓我不禁想起在瑞士的健行經驗。 接下來這幾幅以瑞士為主題的水彩作品，像是「Thusis, with the entrance to the Via Mala」 、 以及「Lausanne: Sunset」，他以金黃色調描繪風景的特色就湧現了。 「Burg Treis」畫面簡單，卻給人親臨現場感受晨光與山嵐的錯覺。 「Brunnen, from the Lake of Lucerne: Samples Study」因為是習作，所以有濃濃的插畫、速寫感。 這次畫展主視覺「The Blue Rigi, Sunrise」，以水彩高明呈現瑞士的湖光山色。 他的作品中，以一系列威尼斯創作聞名於世。早期一點的像是「Bridge of Sighs, Ducal Palace and Custom-House Venice: Canaletti」，筆觸與色調都相當古典。 現場也展出1819年畫面輕盈的水彩作品，如「Venice: The Punta della Dogana, with the Zitelle in the Distance-Early Morning」、 與「The Grand Canal, Venice, from the Traghetto di San Felipe, with the Ca’ Corner della Regina and Ca’ Pesaro」。 「The Grand Canal, Venice, with Santa Maria della Salute and the Palazzo Corner della Ca’ Grande 」、 與「The Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, across the Bacino from the Hotel Europa towards Sunset」，是他最後一次造訪水都的水彩創作。 夜景作品如「The Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute, Venice, Lit by a Rocket, across the Grand Canal from the Hotel Europa at Night」、 與「The Piazzetta, Venice, from the Piazza San Marco, at Night, with the Campanile and Palazzo Ducale」也氣氛好好。 更吸睛的，是如霧裡看花的作品。像是「Venice-Maria della Salute」、 「Venice-Noon」、 與「Venice Quay, Ducal Palace」。景物越來越虛，空氣感越來越強。可以體會什麼叫做「模糊是我的強項」！ 也因為如此，他特別擅長海景題材，像是「Hurrah! For the Whaler Erebus! Another Fish!」、 「Stormy Sea with Blazing Wreck」、 「Study of Sea and Sky, Isle of Wight」、 「Brighton Beach, with the Chain Pie in the Distance, from the West」、  

與「Three Seascapes」。 最後這幅「Venice with the Salute」，幾乎進入抽象畫的境界。形體若隱若現，只剩下色彩來呈現威尼斯的風景。比起同時代的畫家，Joseph Mallord William Turner可說是超越了當時對風景畫的想法。即使在今日，依舊讓人悸動不已啊！
